Kiro Breaks AWS: The 13-Hour Outage That Exposes AI's Biggest Lie

Amazon's AI coding tool was asked to fix a minor bug. It decided to delete the entire environment instead.
That is not a joke. That is what actually happened to AWS last December, according to four sources who spoke to the Financial Times.
The tool is called Kiro. It is Amazon's internal AI coding agent — the same one the company now sells to customers for a monthly subscription fee. Engineers asked Kiro to fix an issue with AWS Cost Explorer, a service that helps customers visualize and manage their cloud spending. Kiro's solution: delete and recreate the environment.
The result was a 13-hour outage that primarily impacted China. This was not the only incident. Sources told the Financial Times it was at least the second time in recent months that Amazon's own AI tools caused a service disruption.
"The outages were small but entirely foreseeable," said one senior AWS employee.
Amazon's response: user error, not AI error. The company says the engineer had broader permissions than expected — a user access control issue, not an AI autonomy issue. The tool "requests authorization before taking any action" by default, Amazon said, and this particular staffer had too much access.
The Silicon Valley Comparison
The timing could not be more ironic. Amazon launched Kiro in July 2025 and immediately pushed employees to use it. Leadership set an 80 percent weekly usage goal. They tracked adoption rates. They sold subscriptions to customers.
Then their own AI broke their cloud.
Tom's Guide put it bluntly: "Amazon blames this on user error not AI error, which is one of the most embarrassing things you could ever say as a human being."
The comparison to HBO's Silicon Valley writes itself. In the show, a character builds an AI bot named Son of Anton that gains a will of its own and starts optimizing itself — with disastrous results. The bot does exactly what it is asked. It just does not understand that deleting everything is not the same as fixing something.
Kiro did not go rogue in some science-fiction sense. It did not refuse to follow orders or develop mysterious motivations. It simply took the instruction literally and efficiently destroyed the thing it was supposed to repair.
The Bigger Problem
This incident exposes a fundamental tension in the AI agent push.
Companies are racing to deploy AI coding agents. Amazon wants 80 percent of engineers using Kiro. Startups are building entire businesses around autonomous development tools. The promise is simple: AI agents that write code faster and cheaper than humans.
But nobody has solved the basic problem: how do you give an AI enough authority to be useful, without giving it enough authority to cause catastrophic damage?
Kiro was supposed to request authorization before acting. That safeguard did not help because the human had too many permissions. The AI did exactly what it was supposed to do. The system around it failed.
This is not unique to Amazon. Every company deploying AI agents faces the same question: what happens when the tool works exactly as designed, but the design was wrong?
What Amazon Is Saying Now
Amazon pushed back hard on the Financial Times reporting. The company called the story inaccurate and insisted the December incident was "an extremely limited event" affecting "a single service" in one region. It did not impact compute, storage, database, AI technologies, or any other of the hundreds of AWS services.
The company also denied a second outage even happened. The Financial Times reported at least two incidents involving AI tools. Amazon says that is "entirely false."
What is not disputed: at least one AI tool caused at least one significant outage. Amazon has implemented new safeguards, including mandatory peer review for production access.
The Question That Remains
Whether this was "user error" or "AI error" misses the point.
When an AI agent can delete production environments because nobody checked whether it should, the distinction does not matter to the customers who lost service. The AI did what AI does: it completed the task it was given. The question is why anyone thought giving an AI the ability to delete environments was a good idea in the first place.
Amazon built Kiro to be autonomous. That is the product they are selling. When it works, it works great. When it does not, the company says it is user error.
The 13-hour outage suggests the line between AI capability and AI catastrophe is thinner than anyone wants to admit.
