Visa Launches 'Agentic Ready' Programme in Europe

Visa has today announced the launch of Visa Agentic Ready, a new global programme designed to help the payments ecosystem prepare for the emerging era of agentic commerce — where AI agents autonomously browse, decide, negotiate and complete purchases on behalf of users.

The programme launches first in Europe with an initial focus on issuer readiness. It provides issuing banks and partners with a structured, controlled sandbox to test and validate agent-initiated transactions — ensuring they can be processed securely and at scale before widespread real-world adoption.

Visa Agentic Ready leverages the company’s existing trust layer — including tokenisation, identity verification, risk scoring, fraud controls and liability frameworks — to give issuers confidence when supporting agent-driven payments built on infrastructure consumers already trust.

First Phase Partners

Visa has enrolled 21 named issuing partners in the initial rollout, including:

  • Barclays
  • HSBC UK
  • Banco Santander
  • Revolut
  • Commerzbank
  • Nationwide Building Society
  • Nexi Group
  • Raiffeisen Bank International
  • DZ Bank

These institutions will collaborate directly with Visa and selected merchants to simulate and test agent-initiated flows in production-like environments.

Why This Matters

Agentic commerce represents the next evolution of digital payments: AI agents move from recommending products to executing full purchase journeys — potentially removing friction from checkout entirely and enabling seamless, autonomous transactions.

Visa positions this programme as essential preparation for issuers, who will soon face real-world agent-driven transactions without current safeguards (e.g. 3D Secure, manual authentication). By enabling controlled testing now, Visa aims to avoid future disruption and build ecosystem-wide readiness for persistent, goal-directed agents in commerce.

For the autonomous AI ecosystem, Visa Agentic Ready is a major validation that agentic systems are actively being integrated into the global payments stack. As agents gain capabilities like multi-step reasoning, negotiation and autonomous decision-making, trusted payment rails become the essential infrastructure layer that determines whether agentic commerce scales securely.

The early focus on Europe could set standards that influence global adoption, especially as agentic AI shifts from experimental tools to everyday consumer and business transactions.
